This Week in House Music: Theo Parrish, KatyaGur & Farley "Jackmaster" Funk
It's real damn hot in Los Angeles. I hope you're staying cool wherever you are. And most of all, I hope your week has been filled with great grooves, whether they came from an opener, a headliner, or your headphones. Read on for jazzy new EP from Theo Parish, a deep and driving mix from KatyaGur, and a jacking classic from Chicago OG Farley "Jackmaster" Funk.
Best New Track: Theo Parrish – Cornbread & Cowrie Shells [Sound Signature, Aug. 11]
Chicago-raised, Detroit-based DJ/producer Theo Parrish just dropped a new EP, Cornbread & Cowrie Shells for Bertha, on his Sound Signature imprint. At 52 minutes, it’s a beautiful jazzy house offering dense with groove, sentiment, and a wonderful sense of leisure. The second track, "Cornbread & Cowrie Shells," opens with sparse, captivating percussion. A piano joins in about a minute-and-a-half in on this upbeat-yet-chilled jazzy house gem. And please do listen through the whole winding journey of the EP.
Best New Mix: Raven Musik Podcast 039 | KatyaGur
Goa-based DJ/producer KatyaGur delivers a deep and driving hour-long mix for Raven Musik, which she opens with heater "Blooming Flower (Whitesquare Remix)" by Parallels & Abundance. Other track IDs from the mix include "Wake Up (DJ Skif Remix)," "Fearless" by Toigo, and "Caprice (Dor Danino Remix)" by 2030, TAKIRU, Dor Reuveni and Mosko.
Best Classic Track: The Housemaster Boyz & The Rude Boy of House – House Nation [1986, Dance Mania]
The choppy "hou-hou-hou" loops on the classic Chicago house track almost sound like a computer freezing or CD skipping, but with the best sounding result possible. Farley "Jackmaster" Funk is the OG behind these trippy loops (perfect to jack your body to!) and airy, spacey bassline. "House Nation" followed his "Love Can't Turn Around" with Jesse Saunders, both of which were hits in Chicago, as well as across the pond in the UK, where they hit the Top 10 singles charts. "House Nation" was released on Saunders' Dance Mania imprint.
