This Week in House Music: Mr. Fingers, Roman Flügel & Model 500
There's a lot of buzz in the dance music world; EDC Las Vegas is all wrapped up, and Detroit's iconic Movement Electronic Music Festival returns on Saturday. I'm beyond ready to get down to some top-tier house and techno this weekend and will definitely be grooving to my selections for This Week in House as I pack my bags.
Best New Track: Mr. Fingers - Something's Going On (Alleviated Records, May 20)
Everything the legendary Chicago house maestro Larry Heard releases is a gift; you truly feel love in his music. And on Friday, May 20, he released his fifth studio album as Mr. Fingers, his oldest and most-known alias, on his own Alleviated Records. Around The Sun Pt. 1is an hour of his perfect brand of chilled, sunshiny jazzy house bliss. And while it's hard to pick the "best" track among the 10 gems, "Something's Going On" is a one of the more up-tempo tracks, and features poignant vocals from Heard about the world we live in.
Best New Mix: ROMAN FLÜGEL @ DGTL AMSTERDAM - Gain by Gorillas
German left-field techno and IDM producer Roman Flügel always serves up weird, groovy and enchanting rhythms on the dance floor. His latest mix is an hour-and-12-minute set from DGTL Amsterdam 2022, held in April. There's plenty of acid house, synths, and more otherworldly sounds in this energic and winding journey.

Best Classic Track: Model 500 - No UFO's (1985, Metroplex Records)
Under his Model 500 alias, Detroit techno forefather Juan Atkins makes futuristic, strange, spacey techno-tinged house. The first was beamed straight from outer space in 1985, with "No UFO's" on the A-side and "Future" on the B-side. "No UFO's" sounds like a transmission of a robot new wave band echoing through a spaceship. As Timeout explains in their 20 Best House Music Songs Ever list, "'No UFO's' was decidedly, defiantly different to the abundance of smoother, Chicago-style tracks of the time (1985), making its weird, robotic grooves even more alluring." Beam me up, Juan!
